We May Impact
There are so many instances of Radio Sagarmatha that made tremendous impact on foreign to domestic domains. Imagine for a moment how a fearless and informed team can make a difference! What follows are only few instances of how Radio Sagarmatha shaped the national agenda:
- Government backed down from signing a controversial extradition treaty with Indian government during the 2007 Dashain holiday when Radio Sagarmatha conducted a studio discussion program that Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula was traveling to New Delhi to ink the deal which would have obliged Nepalese side to hand over third country national to India. It all happened when the newspapers had shut down for Dashain holidays.
- The case file belonging to Tulasi Devi Ghimire had gone missing in the Supreme Court in a suspicious manner. But the same was retrieved when we sensitized the issue by interviewing Til Prasad Shrestha, Joint Registrar. We gave voice to her!
- The fact that Radio Sagarmatha intensively reported the issue of gender and gender relations with stakeholders has finally led the nation to come up with inclusive and gender friendly legislation including reproductive health for women.
- Radio Sagarmatha gave voice to Dalits and indigenous communities demanding enhanced political representations which later on culminated in ensuring their optimum representation in constituent assembly.
- Radio Sagarmatha gave voice to ethnic communities and compelled the parties to opt for dividing the nation on the basis of community distribution when deciding the federal structure of the nation.
SOCIAL SERVICE AND COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION
Radio Sagarmatha has contributed to rescue and rehabilitation efforts through its broadcasts as and when natural disasters overtake the nation. It contributed to the rescue and rehabilitation efforts when floods and landslide caught up with western part of the country during 2002. It repeated the act again in 2006 when similar disasters caught up with mid- and eastern tarai. Similarly, it contributed to rehabilitation efforts when district headquarters of Taplejung district was gutted down by fire. Our reporters had come up with fast updates, which alerted those involved in rescue efforts. The broadcasts had gone a long way in mobilizing the community in rescue efforts. The last time when it contributed to the rescue and rehabilitation efforts was when the flooded Koshi River broke the spurs, resulting in incalculable loss in August 2008. Moreover, it runs PSAs on environment, sanitation, rule of law, gender relations, social justice, education, child rights, human rights, rights of the women, and public health on its own while also promoting the cause of consumers' interests.
