The literal translation of Saha Astitwa is Coexistence.
This is a 45 minutes magazine aiming at promoting gender equality
and a harmonious coexistence between the sexes. Saha Astitwa's
main target audience is the youth of Nepal and policy makers.
The show has been on the air for two and a half years and is also
broadcast on the radio network to other localities around the country.
Saha Astitwa is co produced and sponsored by Oxfam Nepal.
Some of the objectives
of Saha Astitwa are:
To bring gender issues to the mainstream
in Nepali society, to sensitize people from all sectors of society
but in particular policy makers to gender related issues, to influence
media attitudes towards women's issues and to set an example of
gender sensitivity among other media outlets in Nepal.
Themes covered by the producers
of Saha Astitwa include, child rights with an emphasis on girls,
public health with an emphasis on women, the situation of the Dalit
and other disadvantaged ethnic groups, development issues affecting
women, women's trafficking and women and children in conflict situations.
Saha Astitwa features news on
gender related issues and women's empowerment collected from Kathmandu
and other district's newspapers, faxes sent to the programme and
OXFAM sources. Other weekly show components are: Discussion or phone
interview, usually with a government official on a policy-making
position or an expert on an issue concerning gender; open debate
on a gender issue with participation from listeners and experts;
women's voices telling about their experiences.
A Legal Advice feature has been recently introduced.
A lawyer offers advice to women as to what to do on a variety of
issues when they are confronted with them: Rape, how to preserve
the prove what legal procedure to follow in order to punish the
perpetrator; abortion rights, domestic violence among others. Listeners
can also call and ask questions to the lawyer.
Five minutes episode mini series running for 4
to 5 weeks have also been introduced recently. These series are
a good way of exploring the different aspects of any issue, such
as domestic violence, and keep the listener coming back each week
for the following episode on the given issue.
