In Sangeet Sarobar we incounter an endless spring
of music from Nepal. Nepali oldies, both know and unknown and popular
literature make up the content of this popular show. Deepak Raj
Pandey hosts Sangeet Sarobar every night offering his loyal listeners
music, commentary, interviews with Nepali musicians and writers
as well as the creations of the very inspired listeners.
Sangeet Sarobar attempts
to serve as a platform to unknown Nepali creators, composers, singers
and writers. It gives priority to mature authors most of whom are
over 60 years of age, and who have not has the oppertunity to showcase
their work in the media before. The show attempts to bring to light
unknown or disappearing songs and literary creations and archiving
this material. By doing so, it is helping to preserve popular Nepali
culture. The show has a great following among the young and in this
way is helping to bridge the generational gap between the young
and the older.
Aside form music, poetry reading and
commentary, Sangeet Sarobar has the following weekly features:
Saturdays - Live interaction with creators;
Tuesdays - Book review;
Wednesdays - Interview; Thursdays
and Fridays - Live reading of listener's letters.
Careful selection of songs and
presentation of unique material collected by the producer has contributed
to the popularity of the show. However, documentation is virtually
non-existent and the producer relies mostly on interviews with the
ccreators themselves. Since most of the composers, singers
and writers tend to be older people, mobility or acquiesce to interviews
has been a challenge. Some of the authors featured at Sangeet
Sarobar have never been interviewed before and there lies the
beauty of the show.
Sangeet Sarobar has become
so popular that other commercial radios have been encouraged to
produce similar shows, which has resulted in an increase of Nepali
popular culture content in their broadcasts. |
